"The General" is a public domain silent film from 1927 featuring Buster Keaton. It's storyline is developed enough to make it a good pick for a silent film scoring project. Students will be able to apply the essential functions of film scoring and include Foley and perhaps some dialog as well.
"Wings" is a silent film and was the first movie to win an Oscar.
Excellent examples of the use of leitmotif in television shows, feature films, video games, etc.
