    The Atlanta teens are part of a group called HOTGIRLS (Helping Our Teen Girls In Real Life Situations). Although rap is often blamed for promoting degrading images of women, HOTGIRLS uses rap music to start conversations with girls about the challenges they face growing up.

    Early this year Carnegie Mellon University released a game that asked children to serve as “cyber cadets” protecting the Web. Now the institution has followed that title up with a game that helps teach Web users to sniff out “phishing” scams.

    If approved, the Game School will become a NYC public school in 2009. Executive Director of the Gamelab Institute of Play, Katie Salen, and other planners are looking at how games naturally engage players & teach them new skills, and hope to apply those principles to create kids who not only ace their SATs, but are also well suited for the 21st century.

    The University of Plymouth, in Britain, has established a region in the virtual world Second Life to educate students about contraception and sexual health. The site’s digital characters, called avatars, can even grab free condoms from a dispensing machine.

    Maybe you want to throw your incumbent representative out of office in the next election. Well it may not be easy, especially if you live in a state where redistricting has lead to ultra-safe seats for incumbents. A group of computer programmers at the University of Southern California developed a videogame to explain the process and show constituents how to win.

    Two important, if somewhat cliche, online public service videos warn teenagers about the dangers of putting photos and personal information online. Sponsored by the Ad Council, the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children and Project Safe Childhood in the U.S. Department of Justice, they are part of a Think Before You Post ad campaign.

    Rutgers University's Paul Robeson Library has produced a four-part video that tells students not to steal one another's work and warns them that they could receive a failing grade from a course or be expelled from the university if they are caught. It's a serious message but an amusing video, with a photograph of a bobblehead professor speaking in an exaggeratedly schoolmarmish tone to students, represented by 1950s-style headshots, who respond with gasps and bulging eyeballs

    We fail to Protect The Children when we react with fear & hate to the challenges inherent to interactive media, rather than teaching kids to think critically about what they encounter. We do students a disservice when we provide them with teachers who aren't equipped with the skills to incorporate computers and the internet into education.
