Guide to Snowflakes

if you have a few moments to get outside and collect some snowflakes, please do so! Use some black construction paper as a background for collecting and grab some magnifying glasses from the EE equipment room to investigate. If you have some clear laquer in a spray, put it outside for an hour or so to get cold. Spray some on a piece of overhead plastic (also kept outside to be cold) and then collect snowflakes. Let them settle into the laquer for a while and then bring inside. Put on the overhead and see what kinds of snowflakes you have.

Many of these snowflakes are stellar dendrites and they are stunning! If you want some more information in identifying snowflakes, how snowflakes are formed and what temperatures

Explore the Arctic with GoNorth! - Free adventure learning for the K-12 Classroom at PolarHusky.com

This is a great program that is an on-line adventure learning program that follows a dog-sledding expedition originally started with Will Steger (this year is Finland, Sweden, and Norway and starts in about a week). It has FREE, curriculum (very easy to use, and is developed through the U of MN), and is appropriate for K-12. I used it when I taught 10-12 EBD, and the kids loved it. It has an environmental focus, but also includes ALL discipline areas, including cultures and geography. The website is easy to use, and although you have to sign up, it is all FREE. This is really a great opportunity, so I just wanted to pass it on, so maybe you could pass on to your teachers!
