    Early this year Carnegie Mellon University released a game that asked children to serve as “cyber cadets” protecting the Web. Now the institution has followed that title up with a game that helps teach Web users to sniff out “phishing” scams.

    If approved, the Game School will become a NYC public school in 2009. Executive Director of the Gamelab Institute of Play, Katie Salen, and other planners are looking at how games naturally engage players & teach them new skills, and hope to apply those principles to create kids who not only ace their SATs, but are also well suited for the 21st century.

    Passport Reading Journeys provides targeted intervention to middle and high school students reading three to four years below grade level. Research shows that approximately 6 million students in middle school and high school continually fail to achieve proficiency on standardized tests. Experts attribute their poor performance to student frustration and non-motivational materials. Through explicit instruction using high-interest content, Passport Reading Journeys provides the intervention these students need to accelerate their reading skills toward grade-level proficiency.

    Raw Danger game, play different characters. Each character’s actions affect at least one other character. If a man asks for your help and you refuse, you may find yourself later playing that man. Choose a path that causes something to collapse and another character will have one avenue of escape cut off. Raw Danger illustrates that every decision can have consequences. Poss intervention.

    Maybe you want to throw your incumbent representative out of office in the next election. Well it may not be easy, especially if you live in a state where redistricting has lead to ultra-safe seats for incumbents. A group of computer programmers at the University of Southern California developed a videogame to explain the process and show constituents how to win.
