1voteSecond Life is being investigated by German police following allegations that some members are trading child abuse images in the online world.

1voteIt is another of the Internet's most cutting-edge applications outside the Web: the online community of surrogate identities in the 3D realm of Second Life. It's a virtual world supported by real dollars from companies that lease virtual space, providing the service with real revenue. But just how many real users does it have?

1voteAs a 3D virtual world, everything that exists in this virtual world—objects, buildings, clothes, land—has been created by the residents. 3voteTateru started actively mentoring on her first day inworld, and kept doing so until late 2006, though by February 2006, her focus had started to move towards increasing the organisation and effectiveness of the volunteer teams. Tateru is an RL autistic (with Asperger's Syndrome). Thought this was a good example of both mentoring and the empowerment of otherwise marginal groups online.

1voteCahill is described as the political officer for the Second Life Liberation Army, which maintains its own website. The SLLA is pressuring Second Life publisher Linden Lab to give residents greater say in how the game operates. Check out the SLLA web link.

1voteI have never believed that SL is going to be a mass movement in any meaningful sense of the term. SL interests me as a particular model of participatory culture. SL embodies a new mixed media ecology in which institutions with very different levels of power, wealth, and influence co-exist in a shared virtual space creating more equivalence in terms of their relationship to the media landscape.

2voteGet a First Life is a hilarious Second Life parody by Vancouver web geek and Northern Voice co-organizer Darren Barefoot. Membership perks include “going outside†and the ability to “fornicate with your own genitalsâ€.
