    "While I don’t think it really falls under a copyright/fair use issue, it still breaks the Terms of Service of the site; however, when put in a difficult place of not being able to use content due to circumstances beyond your control, many teachers could justify using other means to obtain content from YouTube that isn’t covered in their Terms of Service."

    New Zealand computer scientists have developed Eve, an affective tutoring system (ATS) which can adapt its response to the emotional state of children by interaction through a computer system. The researchers say their teaching system, dubbed ‘Easy with Eve,’ is the first of its type and add they ‘wanted to create a virtual teacher capable of reading and understanding body language and facial expressions to ensure that it has the attention of students.’

    If the district is going to take a principled stand against Wikipedia because some information is biased or incorrect, is it also taking out all of the encyclopedias (which research has shown, on average, to be as inaccurate as Wikipedia)? Is it removing all of the news magazines and newspapers? The article makes a big deal about how school librarians preview materials before they’re placed on the shelves, but I can guarantee you that librarians and media specialists do not have time to screen every word of every incoming publication.

    Now the last time that I wrote about censorship of websites at my school I was jokingly accused of biting the hand that feeds me by my school’s tech director. While I agree with my tech director that authority should be respected, and the decisions that those in leadership roles make are an honest attempt to protect our students, Mr. Warlick’s comments got me thinking. Is it in our student’s best interests’ to rethink the traditional top-down model of filtering and censorship when it comes to using the Internet and communication tools in school?

    The first thing we educators have to do to integrate literacy habits into our classrooms is to practice literacy habits as teachers and as master learners.

    Beyond proficiency in core subject matter, students now must be media and information literate, globally aware and skilled at online collaboration if they are to be successful digital and global citizens. School administrators no longer can afford to be unfamiliar with what constitutes effective technology-infused pedagogy.

    While the big public news for Ning this week is their participation in and support of Google's Open Social platform (will have to save talking about that for another day), yesterday they made a quiet decision which will greatly benefit the educational community: to provide ad-free student networks to K-12 educators.

Remember that what might be obvious to a seasoned Web 2.0 teacher might not always be obvious to a “first year” newbie interested in creating a Classroom 2.0 learning environment.
